What to expect
We want to make it as comfortable as possible for you to come and enjoy our fellowship so here is a “how to” guide for Sundays at Califon United Methodist Church.
Welcome: As a visitor you are welcome to worship among us, participate in any of our activities and attend any of our study groups. To learn more about membership, please speak to our pastor.
Parking: Califon UMC has two parking lots; one on either side of the building. Handicapped spots are in the east parking lot near the side entrance.
Entering the Church: There are three main entrances to the church. Stairs lead to two entrances on River Road each open to a narthex to the sanctuary. The third entrance on the east side of the building is accessible by stairs or a ramp. The lobby here leads to Fellowship Hall on the left where Sunday School is held, and to the sanctuary on the right, at a very small step down.
As a Visitor: You will not be asked to stand up or to wear a red ribbon, but you may be greeted and welcomed by any number of our church family. Please complete the visitor card found in your bulletin. You will receive additional information from our church, a note during the week or possibly a phone call welcoming you back.
Diversity: People come to our church from the near and far. Some people walk to church and others drive past many other churches to come here because they want to be a part of a unique experience. We are diverse financially. Every person is a child of God and we accept them as they are. We are diverse in theology. John Wesley believed that “In essentials unity, in non-essentials freedom, in all things charity.” That is what we strive for at Califon UMC.
Sunday Worship: There are greeters at the main doors as you enter on Sunday mornings who can help you find your way. Upon entering the sanctuary you will be greeted and handed a bulletin that will give you all the information you will need to participate in the worship service. It will also include our weekly announcements and a sign-up sheet for events being held.
Dress: We have no dress code! Suits or jeans, wear whatever you feel comfortable in as you worship God.
Children: We love children and consider them a vital part of our church family. Children participate in church with their parents during the first part of worship. After a special message and prayer with the pastor, they go to Fellowship Hall for Sunday School with the Sunday School teachers. Parents meet their children in Fellowship Hall when church ends.
Opportunities to Serve: Often, we have a sign-up sheet in our worship bulletin. You can use this to sign-up for an event, a service project, a class, or a ministry.
Holy Communion: We practice open communion. That means that you will see members, guests, and children take communion. You do not need to be a member of Califon UMC to participate. Communion is served on the first Sunday of the month and on specific holy days throughout the Christian year.
Do I have to join your church? No, you do not have to join, you are always welcome to worship among us, participate in any of our activities and attend any of our study groups.
How do I join? If you are interested in joining our church, please speak to our pastor, who will guide you through the preparation you need. Membership is a choice and commitment which we want you to make only when the time is right for you. You can become a member by Baptism, by Profession of Faith, or by Transfer from another United Methodist Church or another denomination. We believe that the Holy Spirit works within other churches and if you have previously been baptized we do not “re-baptize” you.
